✅ How many times do you hear Bros saying how well you can develop your hamstrings through squatting? Well, in reality, you really don’t.

✅ The function of the hamstrings is to flex the knees and extend the hips, which is why exercises such as Leg Curls and RDLs (Romanian Deadlifts) are GREAT for hamstring activation & development.
When we squat, we can’t really target the muscle in a meaningful way (down to 20% activation) as per what the research says.

🚨 Why?

✅ During the concentric (lifting phase of the squat) we’re extending the hip joint , which is actually one role of the hamstrings: however, we’re also extending the knee joint, therefore stretching the muscle.. and this happens simultaneously, which means that the hamstrings don’t really contract much.

✅ Sure, the hamstrings will work as great dynamic stabilizers: Infact when the knee is bent >90, the tension of the hamstrings will help stabilize the knee by countering the anteriorly directed forces of the Quadriceps (dislocating force) on the knee.

However when it comes to muscle building, the squat alone can’t be used as a tool to develop the hamstrings since there are many more effective exercises to do so in a much better effective way.

Is there a way to activate your hamstrings when squatting? And if so, would that be helpful? If you guys want me to do a series on the hamstrings and how to target them..let me know down in the comment section below!
